A Travel to Exceptionally Beautiful "Meemure"...
Meemure, which one can called to as a divine world on earth with a very less amount of population nearly about 400 and about 125 families living, is an isolated village in the Central province of Sri Lanka rich in natural and scenic beauty. It is located 324 m above the sea level. This is one of the most rural villages in Sri Lanka which is still unpolluted and rich in greenery. The way to Meemure is of course a bit difficult, but if some one reaches there they will never regret that.
This village is enriched with bio diversity; where to the east is the 'lakegala' mountain, to the west there is the Knuckles range, to the northern is a forest and to the south there is the 'Heen' river. And also there are about 25 species of fresh water fish and out of that 8 are endemic and 7 are nationally threatened. And also over 130 species of birds can be found within the area and all these makes Meemure an exceptionally beautiful place.
And also the folklore says that the history of this village goes back to about 5000 years and the 'lakegala' situated to the nothern part of the village was used as the security power source of King Ravana who ruled the country during that period. And the villagers there believe that the dead body of King Ravana was placed in 'lakegala'. And also the once when 'Kuweni' was banished from the castle by 'King Vijaya' when he married for the second time, it is believed that 'Kuweni' lived in a forest near Meemure with her two children and the indigenous people of Sri Lanka originated from these two children and still the indigenous people of modern Sri Lanka are based on 'Mahiyanganaya' which is about 60 km from Meemure. And also they say that they got their village name because of the 'Mee' trees that surrounded the village.
And also when we visit there, you can have a look into the life of traditional villagers there. The houses here are built in an eco-friendly manner using clay an that wall building mechanism cannot be found anywhere in Sri Lanka. Their main source of income is farming and earlier they mainly cultivated cardamom and now it is paddy, pepper and Chena cultivation. And now even they produce honey to earn a living for them.
