The Multi-religious Sanctuary ; Ambuluwawa Tower

 


 



Ambuluwawa tower is an attractive place in Sri Lanka. It is a biodiversity complex and Sri Lanka’s first multi-religious sanctuary. It consists of stylized Buddhist stupa, a Hindu Kovil, a Muslim mosque and a Christian church. Ambuluwawa is situated approximately 1,965 feet from the level of Gampola town. This is considered one of the must-visit places in Gampola. The mountain stands approximately 3,560 meters above sea level. The elderly and kids are not recommended to climb to the top. There are three ponds, a sacred Bodhi tree, water park, stone park and garden of herbs around this tower.

 


The history of Ambuluwawa temple go back to the 13th century during the reign of king Buwanekabahu IV. Ambuluwawa peak was the canter of the Gampola kingdom during his reign.

Ambuluwawa is a biodiversity complex. Researchers says there is about 200 different kinds of plants from 80 plant families including medicinal plants. Ambuluwawa is surrounded by mountains on all four sides. There are Piduruthalaga in the east, Bathalegala or Bible Rock in the west, Sri Pada or Adams Peak in the south and Knuckles range in the north.

The Ambuluwawa Biodiversity Center was inaugurated by Sri Lanka’s former Prime Minister, Dissanayake Mudiyanselage Jayarathne (“Di Mu”) who was born near Gampola.



There is some cool weather condition near Ambuluwawa tower because it surrounded by huge forest. The temperature is in between 180C and 280C. When someone travel to Ambuluwawa tower, the nearest town is Gampola. There is 9.2Km from Gampola to Ambuluwawa. There is 102Km distance from Bandaranaike International Airport to the Ambuluwawa tower. The gate will open at 8.30 a.m. The distance from the entrance to the mountain peak is about 2.5-3Km.

If you come to visit Ambuluwawa tower remember to carry everything you bring and make sure to keep only your footprint.
